How the Lap Band Works

The lap band works in two different ways to decrease food consumption. Firstly, the positioning of the lap band creates a sense of fullness as the band presses on the stomach and sends signals to the brain indicating that the stomach is full.

Additionally, the band restricts the amount of food that one can consume at once. This is a result of the band separating the stomach into two different pouches. The upper pouch, where the food that you eat goes initially, is very small so you will feel full and satisfied much quicker. The food then slowly empties into the larger section through the space left within the band.

The lap band is adjustable which means that the size of the band opening can be varied to the most comfortable and effective position for every patient, according to their progress. The inner surface of the lap band contains a small balloon which is connected by tubing to a reservoir which is placed under the skin in the abdomen during surgery. This allows ongoing adjustment in the clinic, opening or closing the band as needed.
