What to Eat After Surgery

Foods That Are Easily Tolerated

The following foods are more easily tolerated after having a lap band inserted:

  • Fish, salmon, tuna
  • Cottage cheese
  • Skinless chicken
  • Yoghurt
  • Eggs
  • Fruit
  • Lean Mince
  • Rolled Oats
  • Baked Beans
  • Dry low fat crispbreads
  • Soups
  • Salad items
  • Vegetables

Foods That Are Not Easily Tolerated

The following foods may be more difficult to digest after lap band surgery and should be avoided:

  • White, Fresh bread
  • Meat - specifically steak, chops (more fibrous meats)
  • Dry cuts of chicken
  • Calamari
  • Prawns
  • Rice (Sticky especially)
  • Some fruit skins
  • Dried Fruits
  • Rich fruit cakes
  • Hot potato chips/ wedges
  • Raw carrot
  • Reheated meals and meats

Should you consume foods that are not well tolerated they can become stuck in your band, forming a blockage like a plug. This can potentially lead to dehydration if you're unable to swallow water and if left unchecked, can turn into an emergency situation. If you think at any point that you have a blockage, or experience ongoing symptons such as indigestion, reflux, tightness in the chest or an inability to tolerate solid food it is important to contact the clinic immediately as it is likely you will need to attend for an adjustment.
